Indoor Air Pollution Sources And Some Solutions

If you suffer from allergies or asthma, you probably pay attention to pollen counts and other outdoor air quality measurements.  But what about the air inside your home?  Many people think that the air in their home is safer or cleaner than it is outside, but indoor air quality can actually be worse than outdoor air.

Indoor air quality can be affected by a number of factors that most people don’t think about on a daily basis:

  • Chemicals from appliances, paint, cleaning supplies, air fresheners, upholstery, and carpet
  • Dust mites and other pests
  • Mold caused by excess humidity
  • Radon, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide
  • Secondhand smoke
  • Pet dander

Fortunately, there are often simple solutions to all of these indoor air quality problems.

  • Humidity Control – Maintaining proper humidity levels with a whole-house dehumidifier can reduce the growth of mold, mildew, bacteria, and fungus. When indoor humidity is held in check, most homeowners find that they can run their cooling temperature at a higher setting and still be comfortable.
  • Proper Ventilation – Bringing fresh air into your home will help reduce pollutants.  Open windows and doors when you can, especially when cleaning.  Running kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans will also help remove indoor air pollutants.
  • Clean Filters – Air filters collect dust and other particles before they enter your duct system.  It is important to change them monthly because dirty filters reduce both indoor air quality and equipment efficiency.  Not all air filters are created equal; HEPA filters and portable air cleaners may be needed, especially if members of your family have allergies or asthma.
  • Detection – Work with your contractor to ensure that you have the proper type of detection devices in your home, and that they are properly installed in the appropriate locations.
  • UV Light – Installed in your duct system or in damp, dark places in your home, UV lights can silently kill bacteria, viruses, and molds before they enter your living space.
